Ken Nelson, the creative mind behind characters like Dexter Pixel and Chuck Bradley, opens up about how he crafts his hilarious and memorable skits. We sat down with Ken to learn more about his process, inspirations, and what goes into making his ideas come to life.
Q: What inspired you to start creating skits?
Ken: I've been doing skits for over 20 years. And YouTube is the best platform for showcasing that. I've also admired comedians like Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, and Dave Chappelle. I'm inspired by TV shows like MadTV and In Living Color. SNL is okay too.
Q: How do you come up with ideas for your characters, like Dexter Pixel and Chuck Bradley?
Ken: Just different things I experience through the week. It might be something random that makes me come up with a skit.
Q: Can you walk us through the process of turning an idea into a full skit?
Ken: Usually I write the premise, then refine it with ChatGPT. I will also rewrite it again once it has been run through the AI to add more jokes.
Q: Do you have a favorite skit or character that you’ve created?
Ken: I enjoy Steve because he's the most versatile one.
Q: What challenges do you face when creating skits?
Ken: Getting what is in my head to come through the camera correctly.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to start creating their own skits?
Ken: Create your own characters and use your life and what you find funny and entertaining.
